When I visit the library, I have an idea of the books I intend to borrow. I’ve never read any John Grisham though I have enjoyed many of his movie adaptations.
Skipping Christmas is one of those books that caught my attention because of its title. When I looked at the author’s name, I was very surprised to see that it was John Grisham. Isn’t he the legal thriller guy? (A Time To Kill, The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client). I quickly read the blurb and took the book to counter with the other four books I borrowed.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a comedic read that explored an option I’m sure most adults have pondered but would not dare do. It tells the story a couple, Nora and Luther who decided to forgo the usual Christmas hustle and bustle to take a cruise.
Grisham wrote an excellent scenario of what a couple could encounter if they were in a society that focused on the commercial and competitive aspect of Christmas. The ridicule Nora and Luther faced because they made a decision in their personal lives was astounding but expected, since we are often reprimanded if we do not follow the predetermined social convention. Fortunately, hidden in all the commercializing of Christmas the spirit of Christmas prevailed. I didn’t know that the movie adaptation of this book was Christmas with the Kranks, I haven’t seen it as yet. I love when I read a book before I see the movie. This was a pleasant coincidence.
Skipping Christmas is one of my favourite books thus far this year. It made me question how many things I do strictly because people would disapprove of me or my lifestyle if I did otherwise. Also, though many people enjoy the commotion of the season, it doesn’t mean they can’t appreciate the message at the same time.
